Adventure, Historical fiction

The Dark Monk (The Hangman’s Daughter, #2) by Oliver Pötzsch

The first book in this series was the oddly named The Hangman’s Daughter. Though this book has more content, adventure, blood lust and intrigue, it somehow fell short overall as compared to the previous book. It was good enough for me to queue up the next book in the series. I listened to the entire book thanks to kindle audible.

This tale revolves around all the three main characters having seemingly separate adventures throughout the book. Jakob Kuisl, Simon and Magdalena simultaneously start the investigation into a priest’s death. This leads them into the chequered past of many of the sub groups of Christians in the area. Jakob has to fight for sanity and drawing the line for  the blood thirsty townspeople and it is amazing where civilization once stood in that part of the world. I fervently hope that such times never see the light of day again.Simon is trying to gain a footing in the hearts of the townspeople and Magdalena is just trying to survive her trials. This book focuses on ( again based on mostly true facts) religion with both sides of the coin in focus, the truly faithful and the maniacal fanatic. The rift between the two causes some of the problems but the adventure is fast paced and interesting. I just hope the next on is even more so.Jakob has to fight for sanity and drawing the line for  the blood thirsty townspeople and it is amazing where civilization once stood in that part of the world. I fervently hope that such times never see the light of day again.Simon is trying to gain a footing in the hearts of the townspeople and Magdelena is just trying to survive her trials.
