I gave myself a week off from the actual writing of reviews. I had scheduled enough to last a while and although I did not get back to it in a seamless manner, I am here! I continued reading/listening to books during the time and now I intend to write down the reviews ASAP. This is not a slump, just sheer laziness. The longer I give between a book and the writing of the review, I end up diluting my memory or just plain losing out the ‘feel’ I had when reading. Also, I know that there is no hard and fast rule that I review everything I read here, but if I give way now, I feel like the whole thing would unravel, if you know what I mean?
I read the book years ago, maybe multiple times. I was not a fan of the short story mode (even lesser than I do now). However, my older self wanted to give them another shot, and I learned a few new things.
In the audio version, one thing comes forward with startling clarity: The emotions that are roiling in Hastings. Unlike Watson, he seems to carry a lot more disdain for his friend than I assumed. He says things, and the timing of which when on audio instead of my head, makes me think differently of their ‘friendship’. There are moments of genuine camaraderie, but when the reveal happens, Hastings is usually left nursing a throwaway comment by Poirot, which does not show him in a good light.
That aside, I actually liked these short bursts of mysteries. The plot set up to the reveal does not take long while feeling like an actual story instead of a missing chapter. I did not note down the plots’ individual details, but there was enough variety when it comes to the plot and the type of criminal, as well as the modes of investigation, that made it worth the listen. It may not be the best introduction to the character of Poirot, for that, I think a full-length novel works best.
I will continue to peruse older books of Agatha Christie that I once read, and even as I recollect the plot once the narrative begins. I am enjoying basking in the trivialities of the description littered in the background.
